.INFO is now online, and functioning
The .INFO registry is online and has reloaded
itself a total of 107 times. The biggest problem that the .INFO
registry is having right now is the bombardment of new requests from the
registrars. The registry started up with 350,000 domains, most of which
did not have DNS servers specified. Since no servers were specified before
the registry went live, there were many administrators who tried to submit the
correct information as soon as the registry opened. This lead to an
overload in the registry.
The registry is not doing to good in its relationship with
impatient people. The registry has had to reschedule every event on their
road to being live. Startup domains were supposed to be in the WHOIS and
resolve on September 22nd, then that date was moved to the 27th; finally the
WHOIS was updated very late in the evening on September 30th. The Startup
names finally resolved on October 1,2001. The registry was scheduled to
open on October 1,2001; and met the deadline, but the registry had to shut down
less than 24 hours after opening, for "maintenance". The maintenance took
almost 3 days, it ended on October 4,2001.
The only part of the registry that has actually been down is
the actual registration and update portion, the DNS portion has remained strong
throughout the maintenance, even though there are only 2 servers currently
online. The .COM TLD is still stronger, because it has 13 servers
supporting it. The 13 servers for .COM are in 13 geographically
separate locations and some are even hidden for their own protection. The
.INFO TLD operators are violating
RFC-2870 by not having
enough servers to handle the entire load if 2/3 of the servers go down. To
be in compliance they would need to have at least 3 servers available.
For my personal domain, eNOM has promised that I would have
my domain online by October 8,2001, which is next Monday. For me to
resolve my issues with them, I had to contact Matt Stearn. eNOM's normal
support has still not responded to my questions. A registrant should not
have to contact the registrar's VP to get things running. Even though I
had to go to their VP to get things working, they are still my favorite
registrar because of how promptly they corrected the problem. I look
forward to bringing
Curtis-M-Kularski.info online on Monday. I plan to register an
additional domain name for my technical website.
