.INFO has Arrived
September 23,2001
The INFO System was scheduled to be online on
September 22nd, but for some unavoidable technical issue, that just wasn't
possible. On September 22nd the new TLD was still not ready, and its ZONE
serial number sat at 4. Today, September 23rd, I awoke and found the
ZONE serial set to 5, and the ZONE's domains began to resolve. The
only domains that will be resolvable on the 23rd are the domains that were
registered during the Sunrise period. Domains from the LandRush and
Start-up periods will resolve on September 27,2001. Even though the
domains resolve, I have yet to find one domain that is actually functional
(Except for the NIC). My .INFO domain, Curtis-M-Kularski.info will not resolve
until the 27th, because I registered during Landrush.
The new TLD is supposed to be fully operational by October
1,2001. Unlike the current system of domain registration, the .INFO domains
should be resolvable within 10 minutes of registration. Currently, it takes from
24-72 hours (more if Verisign-GRS has problems) to get a domain online and fully
propagated. For .INFO a more complex system is being used and a new ZONE file
will be issued about once every 7 minutes, as needed. This procedure won't
take place until 00:01 (12:01 AM) UTC (Universal Time) on October 1,2001.
Currently, the .INFO registry is shut down, and that will
remain so until October 1,2001. A registry "shut down" is a time when no
changes can be made to domains. I am unsure how they will do this and also
make the Land rush domains resolve on the 27th. This is an exciting
time on the Internet, because it is expanding rapidly and has a limitless
horizon on which to allow users to create and retrieve data.
I will create more articles in the next few days as .INFO
reaches the point of no return when the registry goes completely live.
